No Such Thing As Free Lunch
There is no doubt there are plenty of free web hosts out there, but you need to ask yourself. Why are they free, what do they get out of hosting your sight for free, and really, what resources can they allocate to your website? The short answer is they aren’t there to provide you hosting out of the goodness of their heart but to make money, whilst providing you with as little service or cost to them as possible! In the end you end up wasting more of your time and money than if you had originally just shelled out a couple bob here and there. Here are my grips with free hosting:
No Bandwidth
Free hosts try to limit as many resources they give to each of their clients/victims. Bandwidth is the first thing to be restricted resulting in your pages loading very slowly and in some cases not loading at all! If a page takes longer than 10 seconds to load now days, the user will have already have left. With broadband on the rise, users are becoming more and more impatient.
Advertising
It’s generally known, if you host on a free host they are going to place advertising on your page, if not plaster it with it. Pop-ups, banners are all extremely irritating to the user and will most likely result in them leaving. Thankfully, free hosts have started matching their adverts to the websites content.
Resources
By considering that, web host is free; one cannot desire for an ample of web space. Often people do not get the space they require to upload their web page and which include all of their information. The user should confirm that there is sufficient amount of space available from his/her free web space provider and it should properly match with the required elements of the user’s web pages.
Reliability
Another point to consider while selecting free web hosting is reliability. Often time’s limitations are put on one’s traffic flow and if one exceeds this, his/her site may be disabled for a period of time or one may even receive a bill. Thus one should find out what the rules for traffic and what can be the consequences if one exceeds his/her limit.
Limitations
Today in most cases, these free hosts put many limitations on what you can actually upload to your server. Their servers are extremely unstable so they need to make sure your website isn’t the last straw! There will be rules of what type of media you can upload, the size and quality of your images. They will even go as far to downgrade the quality of your jpegs!!
Whilst free web hosting, is still... technically free. What are you actually getting? There are so many limitations to free web hosting that I can’t see any benefit to actually using them. Another point we haven’t even looked at is Google plays down websites hosted on free accounts? Why, because most of them relate to spam and have very little to offer.
