Adding Revenue to your Blog
Generating money with their website is one of the first things many people think of when they first venture online. Having these grandiose ideas about how you are going to do this is great, but don't set your goals too high, disappointment often leads to procrastination and then ultimately failure. After the initial excitement of getting your website live has seceded, you slowly begin to realize it's going to be a little tougher then you previously thought!
Obviously your website is not going to be bringing in the cash right away, and please note, it will most likely never achieve this in any significant way if your sole intent on creating this website is to create money. As discussed before, creating loyal visitors with new and interesting content goes a long way in your road to success. Once you have a loyal following you can look at adding the various revenue streams listed below to your website.
Google Adsense is one of the most popular sources for many websites, large and small. Ad are run depending on the type of content you have on your website. Google has managed to create a very accurate algorithm linking ads to your unique content, driving through much higher click through rates then other programs out there. You are paid for each click that your website generates, Google doesn't disclose beforehand how much you will be earning. Although generally people don't make livings off Adsense alone, it is always one of the tools in their basket.
Amazon sells books covering almost any topic, so it's more than likely that you'd be able to find books and material to market for them on your website. Not only that, Amazon stocks the biggest variety of products on the internet, so if you looking for an all rounder Amazon offers a very nice affiliate program to complement your other revenue streams.
There are many other affiliate programs out there, Amazon by no means is the only one worthwhile. Other affiliate programs often cater for different regions and products, if your website targets a smaller niche audience, look at finding an affiliate that targets them. They usually pay a higher percentage of commission then the big guys.
One source of revenue gaining momentum lately is "tip jars", bloggers and website owners have simply started asking their readers for donations. This is very easy to set up using tools like PayPal. Although not as successful as other sources of revenue, if your site steers well clear of being overly commercial, it could do well to add this source to your list.
Tip Jars - Other bloggers have decided to simply ask their readers for donations. I know of many bloggers that do this through a variety of tools - the most popular of them being 'PayPal'. I surveyed a few this week and most have never or only rarely had donations - but for others like it is a major source of income. Andrew Sullivan is said to have made $80,000 in his last pledge week through donations. Here are some links that talk about it.
In the end, depending on your blog / website you going to see which works best for you. There are many factors that come into play such as readership levels, content, competition. However, one thing is certain in your success: never lose sight of why your readers are viewing your site!
